The Lungs
Interesting Facts

THE LUNGS

The lungs are part of the respiratory system and are considered to be
organs. There are two in the body and they are soft, spongy, and cone
shaped. The right lung is larger, wider, and shorter than the left lung
and has 3 lobes. The left lung has 2 lobes and is smaller, narrower, and
longer than the right lung. Average capacity of the lungs is about 1 quart
or 750 ml. The lungs are located in the upper chest (diaphragm) and
enclosed by the rib cage (thoracic) and the left and right lung are
separated by the heart, the heart vessels, thymus, trachea, and the
esophagus. Their functions are to intake oxygen, which in turn oxygenates
the blood, eliminate waste such as carbon dioxide, and also to control air
flow for voice control.
Breathing clean air is probably the main thing that will help the lungs
work their best. Deep breathing exercises, exercise, avoiding mucous
forming foods, eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables are all things
that will help improve the function of the lungs. If the bowels are
congested mucous can not be eliminated effectively.
Smoking and second hand smoke, as well as pollution, hidden gases,
excessive heat or cold, dust, all dairy products except butter are some of
the main culprits of diminished lung capacity or function. Red meat,
chemicals, animal dander, asbestos or mine work (black lung), clothing
factories (brown lung), or working in a bakery (white lung) are others
that can affect the workings of the lungs.
Symptoms or Health conditions that may indicate a problem in the lung
area include chronic coughs, bluish lips or nails (cyanosis), pain in the
chest cavity, difficult or painful respiration’s, coughing up blood,
shortness of breath, rattled breathing, congestion, or gasping.
Location of the Lungs in Different Modalities:
Kinesiology:
There are 2 test zones for the lungs located in the soft tissue
depression 2 inches below the outer 3rd of the clavicle
(collarbone) on both sides. Touch or Tap.
Iridology:
The lungs are located in both eyes. The right lung, in the right eye
at 9:00 to 9:50. In the left eye, the left lung is located at 2:10 to
3:00. Neither lung touches the Autonomic Nerve Wreath.
Reflexology:
The lungs are located about 1 inch below the toes on the ball of each
foot.
Other Thoughts:
Most people’s respiratory problems can be attributed to dairy
products. i.e.…milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt.
Red meats along with sugar also contribute to mucous problems.
Drinking plenty of clear liquids helps to make it possible for lung
secretion and mucous to be moved along properly.
Vaporizers help with needed moisture, but proper cleaning needs to be
done in order to prevent airborne bacteria.
A cough should not be suppressed unless too much sleep is being lost.
The herb Ephedra (Ma Huang) is used in many preparations for the lungs
and related conditions. *CAUTION: DO NOT
TAKE EPHEDRA WITH CAFFEINE PRODUCTS (HEART ATTACKS AND STROKE HAVE BEEN
KNOWN TO OCCUR). AVOID EPHEDRA IF YOU HAVE THYROID DISEASE, HEART DISEASE,
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, DIABETES, OR ENLARGED PROSTATE.
Questions to ask yourself:
Do you suffer from shallow breathing or sleep apnea? A yes answer
indicates a weakness in the medulla area of the brain.
Do you have spider veins, vericose veins, or red blood spots (hemangioma)
on your skin? A yes answer indicates a profound vitamin C deficiency.
Have your Lungs ever collapsed? A yes answer indicates a vitamin A
deficiency or a need for Chinese
Lung Support.

INTERESTING FACTS
Vitamin B-12
deficiency is common in the elderly. Degenerative
neuropsychiatric disorders and cerebrovascular or cardiovascular disease
are potentially related, mainly via hyperhomocysteinemia (excess
homocysteine in the blood), and this underscores the importance of vitamin
B-12 deficiency as suspect in the elderly. This deficiency results mainly
from the poor absorption of vitamins.

A study evaluated the effectiveness of curcumin treatment on impaired
wound healing of diabetic rodents. Wounds of animals treated with
curcumin showed earlier formation of epithelium (cells covering all the
free surfaces in the body), improved neovascularization (proliferation
of blood vessels in tissue), the increased movement of various cells
(such as macrophages) into the wound area, and a higher collagen
content. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 also increased. A delay in
apoptosis (programmed cell death) was seen in diabetics wounds compared
to curcumin treated wounds, which shows that curcumin fostered quicker
healing and growth of new cells. Curcumin was effective both orally and
topically. These results show that curcumin enhanced wound repair in
tissue where healing had previously been impaired by diabetes.

Mullein
LUNG HEALER

Description & Habitat:
Mullein is a biennial member of the snapdragon family and can grow up to
eight feet in height. It starts out as a rosette of leaves secured close
to the ground during the first growing season. By the second year, a tall
pole of flowers develops and the stem and leaves become soft and velvety.
This versatile plant can be found throughout the world. Preferring soil
with a chalky or gravelly consistency, mullein flowers during the months
of July and August.
Traditional Uses: By Nature, mullein is a gentle mucilaginous herb,
but it has a colorful past. During Roman times the stem was stripped of
its leaves and flowers and then soaked in tallow. The people believed that
when mullein was used as a torch in religious ceremonies it would repel
witches. It was also rumored, however, that witches themselves used
mullein as part of their religious worship.
In a similar paradox, some felt that wearing mullein leaves around the
neck would result in pregnancy. Others claimed that placing a mullein leaf
in a shoe would result in protection against conception. Regardless of
which questionable belief prevailed, the common people often stuffed their
shoes with the thick, soft mullein to provide warmth and protection to
their feet during the harsh winter months.
The Romans were not the only ones to experiment with mullein. The Greek
physician Dioscorides used to prescribe mullein for respiratory ailments.
His treatments were so successful that the practice continues to this day.
Rolling the dried leaves and smoking them provided great relief to many
asthmatics. The leaves and the flowers were ground, dried, and brewed into
a tea, which historically relieved lung congestion and ailments, chest
colds, bronchitis, and croup. Today mullein leaves are used in many
remedies for the lungs, sinuses, and lymphatics. They are a gentle,
nourishing remedy for lung tissue and are especially suitable for chronic,
degenerative conditions of the lungs. However, the plant must be taken for
several months to derive maximum benefits.
The oil from the flowers is one of the best remedies for an earache. It
is made by gathering fresh mullein flowers and covering them with olive
oil for 14 days. When this process is complete, simply strain and store
the oil. To use the oil, simply drop some of the warmed oil into the
affected ear, while lying on your side. Wait 5 minutes and then gently
place some cotton in your ear to keep the oil from running out. Relief
from pain and infection have been known to occur within hours. Mullein oil
is often combined with garlic oil for a more effective remedy. When
crushed and applied, the flowers have also been known to remove warts.
Mullein is rich in iron, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, aluminum, and
calcium phosphate. It is primarily mucilaginous or demulcent, which makes
it soothing, softening, emollient, and healing. It has a slight astringent
effect as well. Diuretic, expectorant, antispasmodic, and pain relieving
qualities are also attributed to it.
Here is a list of some of the illnesses mullein has been used to treat
(the most common in capitals): ASTHMA, BRONCHITIS, CATARRH, colds,
CONGESTION (LYMPHATIC), COUGHS, CRAMPS, DIARRHEA, dysentery, EARACHES,
emphysema, hay fever, HEMORRHOIDS, hoarseness, insomnia, mastitis, MUMPS,
pain, sciatica, sinusitis, sores, spasms, sprains, swollen joints,
TONSILLITIS, TUBERCULOSIS, TUMORS, ULCERS, warts, whooping cough, and
wounds.
Typical use is one to three capsules two or three times daily. For
chronic or degenerative conditions, take as a tonic for three to six
months.
