This is basically just the pH balance of the body. Blood being slightly basic (alkaline), pH ranging from 7.35 to 7.45. A pH of 0 to 6.9 being acidic, 7 being neutral, and 7.1 to 14 being basic. The importance of keeping the blood within this range becomes apparent when even the slightest change can become life threatening. There are several mechanisms that act to keep and maintain this acid-base balance and minerals are among these mechanisms. Mineral salts act like buffers within the body and it's fluids. Buffers are the compounds that neutralize acids or bases by collecting/releasing hydrogen ions, and in doing so maintain the proper pH level. |
