Cobalt is an essential mineral that is a component of vitamin B12, or cobalamin. Nutritionally and pharmacologically, the term B12 includes all cobalt containing substances. Normal cobalt levels in the blood are 80-300 mcg/ml (80-300 micrograms per milliliter of blood)

Functions

Vital to the nervous system, helps prevent demyelination (destruction of the outer covering of the nerves, or the myelin sheath) which can cause faulty nerve transmission, beneficial in fighting pernicious anemia, combines with intrinsic factor in the stomach in order to be absorbed by the bloodstream (without intrinsic factor cobalt cannot be assimilated into the bloodstream and is then eliminated from the body, unused), used to treat hepatitis because of it's action in protein synthesis, helps to fight bronchial asthma, essential for healthy skin, building hemoglobin, aids in enzyme activation, can substitute for manganese in activating some enzymes.

Deficiencies can cause

Negative changes in the nervous system, soreness and weakness in the legs and arms, diminished reflex response, impaired sensory perception, difficulty walking and speaking (stammering), jerking of limbs. Any deficiency is ultimately a vitamin B12 deficiency and proper supplementation can alleviate the condition.

Toxicity

Polycythemia (an abnormal increase in red blood cells), elevated erythrocytes (red blood cells) and hemoglobin (a complex protein-iron compound in the blood that carries oxygen to the cells from the lungs and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs), reticulocytosis (increase in the number of young red blood cells in the circulating blood), increase in the red blood cells mass, and normoblastic hyperplasia (an increase in immature red blood cells that still have a nucleus). Congestive heart failure has been reported when beer containing 1.2 ppm (parts per million) was ingested, pericardial effusion (the escape of fluid from blood vessels because of breaking or leaking in the membrane covering the heart), thyroid hyperplasia, and impairment of pyruvate and fatty acid metabolism.

Food Sources

Animal protein is the largest source in which cobalt appears in sufficient amounts. Less significant sources include figs, cabbage, beet greens, papaya, buckwheat, lettuce, and watercress.

Herbal Sources

Goldenseal root, capsicum fruit, dong quai root, pau d'arco bark, dulse, echinacea root, eyebright, wild yam root, pollen, devil's claw root, Ho shou wu root, pumpkin seed, sarsaparilla root, yerba santa herb, nettle leaf, damiana leaf, comfrey root, mullein leaf, butcher's broom root.
