Calcium
On average, a 150 pound human body
contains approximately 2.2 pounds of calcium. It is the most abundant mineral in
the human body. Most of this mineral is contained in the teeth and bones.
Calcium deficiencies can lead to:
Aching joints, arthritis, bone spurs, brittle nails, eczema,
elevated blood cholesterol, heart palpitations, hypertension, insomnia, muscle
cramps, nervousness, neuromuscular excitability, numbness in the arms/legs,
osteomalacia (an abnormal softening of the bone), osteoporosis (a
loss of normal bone density), paresthesia (any feeling others cannot
sense, i.e. numbness, tingling, etc..), pasty complexion, periodontal
disease, pica (eating lead paint), rheumatoid arthritis, rickets, tetany
(a condition with cramps, convulsions, twitching of the muscles, and sharp
bending of the wrist and ankle joints), and tooth decay.
Deficiency of calcium is also associated with cognitive
impairment, convulsions, depression, delusions, and hyperactivity.
Purposes of Calcium in the Body:
 | 99% of the calcium in our bodies is used
for teeth and bones |
 | 1% needed for the following vital functions |
 | Blood clot formation |
 | Muscle contraction and growth |
 | Nerve impulse transmission |
 | The absorption of vitamin B12 |
 | Controlling the amounts of various substances on either side of the
cell membrane |
 | Releasing energy from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins |
 | Maintaining heart rhythm |
 | Preventing acid/alkali accumulation in the blood |
 | Helping the body utilize iron |
Calcium toxicity can lead to:
Anorexia, aphasia (a nerve defect in which there
are problems speaking or speech is lost), ataxia (an inability to
coordinate movement), depression, irritability, memory loss, muscle weakness,
psychosis, arrhythmias, fat intolerance, gastric ulcers, growth retardation, hypertension,
kidney disease, and liver impairment.
FOOD SOURCES:
Dairy foods, salmon (with bones), sardines, seafood, dark green leafy
vegetables, almonds, asparagus, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, broccoli,
buttermilk, cabbage, carob, cheese, collards, dandelion greens, dulse, figs,
filberts, goats milk, kale, kelp, milk, mustard greens, oats, prunes, sesame
seeds, soybeans, tofu, turnip greens, watercress, whey, and yogurt.
HERBAL SOURCES:
Alfalfa, burdock root, cayenne, chamomile, chickweed, chicory, dandelion,
eyebright, fennel seed, fenugreek, flax seed, hops, horsetail, kelp, lemongrass,
mullein, nettle, oat straw, paprika, parsley, peppermint, plantain, raspberry
leaves, red clover, rose hips, shepherd's purse, violet leaves, yarrow, and

CAUTIONS:
Calcium may interfere with Verapamil (Calan,
Isoptin, Verelan), which is a calcium channel blocker sometimes used for heart
problems or high blood pressure, tetracycline, thyroid hormone, certain
anticonvulsants, and steroids.
Phenobarbitol, as well as diuretics may cause calcium deficiency.
Persons with a history of kidney stones or kidney disease should not supplement
with calcium except under the supervision of a physician.
