Food Additives Q

Quinine Extracts (Quinine dihydrochloride) (Quinine sulfate) - These substances are extracted from the bark of the Chinchona tree of South America. They are intensely bitter granules or needles used to flavor such things as carbonated beverages, most often bitter lemon or tonic water. They are also used in the manufacture of bitters, and in the treatment of malaria. Quinine is a toxic alkaloid and as such, the FDA strictly limits the amounts of it that can be used.
