Cardiacs
These herbs will increase the power of the heart.
Carminitives
These herbs contain volatile oils that will stimulate the expulsion of gas
from the intestinal tract. They will also increase the tone of muscle and
stimulate peristalsis.
Cathartics
Herbs that will cause rapid evacuation of the upper intestinal tract and the
bowels. They clean waste from the liver, gall ducts, and alimentary canal. They
will normalize peristaltic action when taken in moderation over an extended
period of time and are not habit forming.
Cholagogues
Herbs that will promote the flow of bile and the purgation of the bowels.
Condiments
These will increase digestive activity and can be used to season food.

Demulcents
Agents that will soften and relieve irritation of mucous membranes. They
have a mucilage property that soothes inflamed membranes.
Deobstruents
These herbs will remove obstructions from the alimentary canal and other
areas.
Dessicants
Herbs that will dry surfaces by absorbing moisture.
Diaphoretics
Herbs that promote perspiration and elimination through the skin.
Influences include the entire circulatory system. There are three categories of
diaphoretics. (Stimulating, Neutral, and Relaxing)
Discutients
Abnormal growths and tumors can be dissolved by using these herbs.
Diuretics
These herbs will increase the flow of urine.

Emetics
Herbs that can be used to induce vomiting and evacuation of the stomach.
Usually given in liquid form. (teas and tinctures)
Emmenagogues
Herbs that are corrective to the female reproductive system. They stimulate
normal menstrual function.
