American Hellibore -
Veratrum viride - CAUTION:
This herb is a cardiac depressant. Deaths, from overdose of this herb have been
recorded. Severe skin reactions and poisoning can occur. This herb is gathered
and cooked as a vegetable because of mistaken identity and the above can result.
This herb should never be used without medical supervision.
Birthwort
- Aristolochia clematitis - CAUTION:
This herb contains whose characteristics are like those of the alkaloid
colchicine, which is poisonous. Use with extreme caution and only under
qualified supervision.
Bloodroot -
Sanguinaria canadensis - CAUTION:
Bloodroot is a sedative herb in large quantities and an overdose can be fatal.
Borage -
Borago officinalis - CAUTION:
Although a very safe herb, some people will develop dermatitis from contact with
the fresh leaves.
Elder Flowers - (a)
Sambucus canadensis (b) Sambucus nigra (c) Sambucus racemosa (d) Sambucus
ebulus CAUTION: Extra care
should be taken when using this herb, as all four varieties can cause symptoms
of poisoning. (a) The whole plant is poisonous. Children have been poisoned by
chewing on the bark. Cooking the berries seems to deactivate the poison and can
be used in pies and jams. (b) The berries of this variety should not be eaten
raw. Diarrhea and vomiting will most likely occur if you eat these raw. (c) The
seeds inside the berries are poisonous. (d) The berries are poisonous on this
variety.
Ephedra
- Mormon Tea, Ma Huang - CAUTION: This
herb is very useful, but due to it's misuse and abuse, there are cautions that
need to be addressed. When used properly this herb has many benefits. See
Antiasthmatics.
Fraxinella

Gotu Kola -
Centella Asiatica - CAUTION:
Do not use if pregnant. People with overactive thyroids should avoid this herb
as well.
Hedge Bindweed
- Convolvulus sepium - CAUTION:
Large quantities of the fresh juice can cause constipation and like all strong
purgatives, this herb is not for extended use.

Peruvian Bark -
Cinchona spp. -
CAUTION:This herb will stimulate uterine contractions, thus it should not be
used during pregnancy, unless of course it is to aid in a tardy delivery. It
should only be used in small quantities and only under qualified supervision. Note
- Magnolia can be substituted for this herb and is much safer.
Wormwood
- (See Anthelmintics) Note - Southernwood or Lad's Love is a much safer choice
than Wormwood.
Valerian -
Valeriana officinalis - CAUTION:
Although this herb has been widely studied, it is still unknown how it works. In
extremely high doses this herb may cause paralysis and a weakening of the
heartbeat. Do not exceed recommended dosages.
